Introduction Concerns prevail in health and social care regarding the need to prove the effectiveness and value of interventions (Marsh et al 2005, Department of Health 2006). Furthermore, there are calls for the occupational therapy profession to provide a robust, research-driven evidence base (White 2003, College of Occupational Therapists 2005). It is firmly acknowledged that occupational therapists themselves should contribute to professional knowledge by engaging in research activities (College of Occupational Therapists 2005). White (2003, p226) opined that occupational therapists should develop a research culture and stated that knowing that we 'do a good job ... [and] our practices are effective are not enough'. Occupational therapists must endeavour to research and disseminate the complexities of practice in order to ensure solid foundations and a credible research legacy.
