Introduction The World Health Organisation (2004) has identified that chronic diseases will be the leading cause of disability by 2020 and that the symptoms experienced by people with chronic diseases will become the most expensive and greatest challenge for health care. In the United Kingdom (UK), 17.5 million adults are estimated to be living with a chronic disease. Improvements in the management of chronic disease have increased life expectancy. However, it is becoming appreciated in clinical practice that the quality of life of those living with a chronic disease, and the impact that symptoms have upon an individual's ability to function, must be addressed. Within health care systems, the role that professional groups, such as occupational therapy, have in understanding the impact of chronic disease is increasingly recognised. Such a multidisciplinary approach will allow clinicians to develop intervention strategies that consider the functional implications of symptoms and optimise quality of life.
